It is a scientific fact that friction creates energy. That is not only true for the world of physics but also applies to emotional phenomena. The more tension there is, the higher the friction becomes, the more energy is created. The necessary tension usually results from two oppositional poles, charged differently and emitting contrary fields of power. Light and Darkness. Hot and Cold. Love and Hatred. Strength and Weakness. This can of course be transferred to music just the same, and there are some bands which thrive on the energy created by the contrary musical poles they include in their sound. One of these bands is dioramic, a rather young formation form southern Germany. Their sound is a unique mélange of numerous, and on first sight opposing acoustic concepts. Like roaring thunder, followed by chirping of birds. Like the sound of a car crash, intertwined with the steady calm of a river. A fistfight in the midst of a blooming meadow. The force created by this friction is enormous, primal and very emotional. dioramic have definitely become a musical force to be reckoned with. The band itself came into being in 2002, uniting members with very different and unique musical background and tastes. Immediately after their foundation, the guys played their first band-stand at the Rittersberg Gymnasium in Kaiserslautern, where they attained the first place, and baffled the audience with their raw energy and expert musicianship. In this phase of the band’s history, their sound can best be described as alternative rock with an edge. Only one year later, after playing several smaller gigs and building a local fan-base, dioramic faced another jury, namely that of the “Bundeswettbewerb: Schülerinnen und Schüler machen Lieder”, a band-contest with federal funding, focusing on young artists. Again they managed to convince that the audience and jury, and were able to win their second first price. In May 2004, dioramic managed to be victorious in the preliminary round of the “Rockbuster”-contest, and were able to win the countrywide finals of said contest in October. By then, dioramic’s sound had changed remarkably, becoming more progressive and featuring many mosh-elements, which remain a part of their sound to the present day. In November of 2004 two decisive benchmarks in the band’s history took place: the recording of their first E.P. by Andy Lübbert in the Jam-Music-Studio in Pirmasens, as well as yet another victory in a band-contest, namely the “Local-Heroes” where dioramic were awarded the first price of the Jury, declared the winner of the entire contest, as well as of the Roland-price. In 2004 the band could again grasp their ever-evolving sound in the form of their first album “Phase of Perplexity”, recorded between November of 2004 and January 2005 at the Twilight-Studios in Illingen; it was mastered and recorded by Marcel Sude, and produced by dioramic and Marcel Sude. The band likes to think of their sound at the time of recording as “progressive Alternative-Emo-Mosh-Core”. Since the release of their debut album, dioramic have played various shows together with very diverse artists, such as Madsen at the “Massiv Attac”, the Emil Bulls and Days in Grief at the “Lahneck Live”-Festival, and of course opening the second day of 2005’s Southside Festival. The new directive which Arkadi, Jochen, and Anton are pursuing at the moment is lovingly entitled “Art-Core”, a powerful fusion of romantic melodious elements with gut-wrenching blast-beats, raw explosions of guitar-blows, all enclosed by a controlled and yet menacingly comprising tunnel of thunderous bass, pierced by a undeniable voice of clarity, constantly wavering between harmonious flow and searing outbursts. written by: Tobias Heiland
