englisch
"Five records into his late-starting career, Joe Fournier has refined his style - if you can actually say refined for a guy who sings with a voice that is as much a holler as it is singing. He simply plays American roots music - country, soul, folk, rockabilly and blues - with stories that will make you laugh, cry and cringe, sometimes all in the same verse." A move in the early part of 2001 to Nova Scotia was, in many ways, a reboot of Joe`s musical aspirations. Having become jaded and burned out from years of bouncing around in the Toronto music scene, the idea was to join his girlfriend in Halifax, maybe open a cafe and forget about music for a while. While rebuilding an old cottage they bought near Peggy`s Cove, he started getting ideas for the kind of songs he`d never written before. Songs that drew on his country roots, personal experiences and crazy characters met while gigging and traveling all those years. Soon there was enough material to fill two albums. By January 2002, at age 41, Joe had recorded his first CD and sent it out into the world. In no time flat he was fielding calls from publishers and managers from Nashville to Europe and beyond. "I found myself suddenly popular with the roots rock and Americana crowd. My kind of people, y`know? The phone was ringing, these gigs were popping up. I was getting invited to do these little festivals. Then a small Scandanavian record company made me a good offer to release the record overseas, and I booked a plane ticket." Folks really took to Joe in places like England, Sweden, Holland, Germany and Belgium. That debut, "Raw Sugar Shed", garnered rave reviews and paved the way for the follow up, "Whiskey Stars" in 2003. Since then, he`s released three more critically acclaimed discs - Three Chord MacGyver (2005), Dirt Road Joyride (2008) and Truth & Twang (2009) - and has steadily built a following on the international festival and house concert circuit. In concert, Joe puts the stories front and centre. He has evolved into a true wordsmith - with "a genuine eye for detail and storytelling, and lyrics as sharp as a broken beer bottle" - as AmericanaUK so eloquently put it. "I`m a fan of great writing - really work hard on my lyrics, and love to lay it all out when I`m performing for a real listening crowd." Joe gets his inspiration from classic tunesmiths like John Hiatt, John Fogerty, Nick Lowe, Hank Williams, Tom Waits, Loudon Wainwright, Shel Silverstein and Bruce Springsteen to name a few. Big musical influences are original-era rock and roll, swampy 60`s southern rock and soul, classic country and old school blues. "I just really like the sound of the old records, where you can hear the room, tell which studio a track came from, just the sound of everyone playing in a room together. There are some great folks still doing that out there, and those are the records and bands I try to search out and enjoy."
