2300 NewcastleThe Seabellies hail from Newcastle on NSW mid-north coast. A town forged by mining and farming industries, whose inhabitants understand the struggle of life in all regional cities – but in this case heightened by being within striking distance of Australia’s largest cosmopolitan city – Sydney. This tension, beauty and uniquely Australian perspective underpin Seabellies cinematically wide music landscapes. A modern day Triffids, their music is rich and lush, full of ethereal electronic sounds, soaring guitars and darkened melodies.
Seabellies arrived on the scene, seemingly from nowhere, as winners of the inaugural Garage To V competition – earning a spot on V Festival stage alongside the likes of Beck and Smashing Pumkins as their first Sydney gig. Some entrance. In the same year Seabellies were awarded ABC Radio ‘Alternative Artist Of The Year’ and ‘Regional Artist Of The Year’ at a ceremony in their hometown. Triple J airplay quickly followed and a succession of six singles have all made their way onto the Triple J playlist. An impressive arsenal made even more so by the fact the band were totally independent and not living in one of the ‘big two’ Australian music cities!
Their first US tour (including the prestigious CMJ Festival) preceded a period of intense songwriting, before the band decamped to record their debut album. All multi-instrumentalists, Seabellies tastefully orchestrate a wide array of interesting sounds – guitars, metalaphone, viola, melodica, trumpets, saxaphone, and accordion to create memorable sonic-scapes. The album recording caught the ear of one of Australia’s oldest and proudest independent labels, Albert’s (home to AC/DC), and the band and label are committed to launching the album, ‘By Limbo Lake’ worldwide in 2010.
