Broken Mile is a band that has a foot in both the past and the present – they love the melodies and the lifestyle of the 60s/70s, but never get lost in their influences or wear them too boldly. Once described live as “like the Coral, but more rowdy and less moody,” when on stage Broken Mile are confident, tight, witty and above all look like they’re having fun. Matt sings with a Steve Marriot-esque growl, backed by harmonies from the rest of the band. Broken Mile has a strong DIY ethic and has achieved much off of their own back. The album is entirely funded and released DIY. Part of that ethic is that they look to closely connect themselves with people who like their music: “we dislike the word ‘fan’, want our audience to feel like they’re going to watch a mate’s band. Then hit the bar with us after.” By their own admission, they maybe give too much away; the band produces regular video blogs that are as much about poking fun at themselves as anything: “we‘re not fussed about maintaining ‘mystique’, we want people to be part our little world”. On the road is where Broken Mile are happiest and have been constantly touring the country, and in the last year, Europe too. They’ve been working hard at building an reputation with promoters and venues as a crowd-pulling band, Broken Mile have played 120 gigs in the last 2 years across the country – without agency representation – including slots with the likes of The Wombats, Pete Doherty, Tiny Dancers, Metro Riots and Doll & The Kicks. Broken Mile\\`s debut album, Skeletons, was recorded at Bark Studios, Walthamstow, with the Brian O’Shaughnessy (Primal Scream), the ideal man to capture the band\\`s sound. At a perfectly formed nine tracks it captures the good times, bad times, sweat and beers that Broken Mile have been through to date. While others are setting out to create chin-stroking tapestries of “challenging” music, on Broken Mile have created Skeletons, a record which remembers that having a good time is OK.
